Keeping Homes Safe and Seniors Independent: How Your Support is Changing Lives in Shelby County
At Habitat for Humanity of Miami & Shelby Counties, Ohio, we believe that everyone deserves a safe and functional place to call home. Thanks to a generous $15,000 grant, we’ve been able to take that mission even further through our Critical Home Repair Program—a vital initiative that helps low-income homeowners stay in their homes with dignity.
What Is the Critical Home Repair Program?
While many people know us for building homes, our work doesn’t stop there. The Critical Home Repair Program allows us to serve residents—most of whom are seniors on fixed incomes—who are already homeowners but are living in unsafe or deteriorating conditions. With this funding, we’re able to purchase essential supplies and materials for repairs that make homes safer, more accessible, and more comfortable.
Our repairs range from installing walk-in showers and replacing worn-out flooring to repairing roofs, building ramps, fixing decks, and upgrading doors. Each project is completed at no cost to the homeowner.
Why This Work Matters
Housing continues to be a growing crisis across the country, and Shelby County is no exception. For many families, home repairs are simply out of reach. But these repairs can be the difference between staying in a cherished home or having to leave it.
By stabilizing homes, we not only make them safer and more functional for current residents, but we also help preserve these homes for future generations. When a home is cared for and maintained, it remains a lasting resource for the community.
Caregivers can more easily assist their loved ones when accommodations like ramps or walk-in showers are in place. Seniors can age in place, maintaining independence and a sense of dignity. And families can rest easier knowing their loved ones are safe and comfortable.
Real Impact, Real Gratitude
Since launching this phase of the program, we’ve completed 11 critical home repairs in Shelby County over the past 18 months. These aren’t just projects—they’re personal stories of hope, relief, and transformation.
Many of the homeowners we serve are overwhelmed with emotion when the work is completed. We’ve seen tears of gratitude, heartfelt hugs, and countless words of thanks. For some, the repairs mean they can finally move freely in their own home again. For others, it’s the first time in years they’ve felt safe from the elements or tripping hazards.
Even more powerful than the repairs themselves is the connection we build. Homeowners enjoy the company and fellowship of our team while work is being done—something that brings as much joy as the finished repairs themselves.
Who Makes It All Possible?
This work would not be possible without the incredible support of donors, sponsors, volunteers, contractors, and our dedicated Construction Manager. Each project is a team effort, fueled by a shared commitment to creating safe, decent, and affordable housing for those who need it most.
Thank you for helping us build more than homes—we’re building stability, independence, and hope. Your support ensures that seniors and families in our community can live safely and securely, in homes they love and cherish.
