Shaping the Next Generation: Pearls & Ties Impact Program Empowers Sidney Youth
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County, we believe that every child has incredible potential—and with the right support, that potential can flourish into leadership, confidence, and lifelong success.
Thanks to a generous $1,150 grant from the Community Foundation of Shelby County, our Pearls & Ties Impact Program at Sidney Middle School continues to grow and thrive, providing local youth with the tools, values, and connections they need to become confident, compassionate leaders in their schools and communities.
What Is Pearls & Ties?
Pearls & Ties is a character and leadership development program designed to “plant seeds of success” in the lives of middle school students. Through seven structured sessions throughout the school year, students participate in interactive lessons, guest speaker presentations, and service opportunities focused on topics like:
- Self-worth & identity
- Leadership & goal setting
- Overcoming adversity
- Diversity, inclusion & community engagement
Each participant receives a symbolic piece of attire—either a pearl necklace or a dress shirt and tie—representing professionalism, pride, and self-respect. The visual reminder reinforces the values they’re learning and helps students begin to see themselves as capable leaders.
Led by Community, Rooted in Mentorship
The program is led by founder Tom Clark, in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters staff and Sidney Middle School leadership. What sets Pearls & Ties apart is its emphasis on community mentorship. Each session features inspirational speakers, including business professionals, local leaders, and role models who bring real-life experience and wisdom to the students.
As students progress, they are encouraged to give back—many go on to serve as Lunch Buddies peer mentors or volunteer with local nonprofits, helping to build a cycle of mentorship that extends beyond the classroom.
Real Impact, Real Growth
The results speak for themselves. During the 2024–2025 school year, we proudly served:
- 106 students
- Welcomed 25+ guest speakers
- Engaged 15+ volunteers
- Hosted intergenerational service activities at local retirement homes
- Showcased student voices at public events like our January Kickoff and the May Sidney Schools Board Meeting
🗣️ From student surveys:
- 76% said they’ve become better community members
- 73% understand the power of their name and reputation
- 71% feel more confident
- 62% better understand the value of keeping their word
- 58% reported academic improvements
Each number represents a student who feels seen, supported, and inspired—many for the first time.
Why It Matters
In today’s fast-paced, often overwhelming world, students need more than just academics—they need guidance, purpose, and meaningful relationships. That’s exactly what Pearls & Ties provides.
“If these kids embrace these core values,” says founder Tom Clark, “we believe they’ll be set up for success not only in school, but in life.”
Through every session, every handshake, every moment of reflection, Pearls & Ties builds not just better students—but better citizens.
